MTBF, MTTR and Equipment Availability Explained

Calculate MTBF, MTTR and inherent availability, interpret the results correctly, and improve maintenance decisions.

Direct answer

MTBF is operating time divided by the number of failures. MTTR is total corrective repair time divided by repair events. Under a simple repairable-system model, inherent availability is MTBF ÷ (MTBF + MTTR). The metrics describe different parts of reliability and maintainability and should retain asset, period and failure definitions.

Calculate each maintenance metric

For 1,000 operating hours and 5 failures, MTBF is 200 hours. If those repairs require 20 total hours, MTTR is 4 hours. The simplified inherent availability is 200 ÷ (200 + 4) = 98.04%.

MTBF is not a promised lifetime and should not be used for non-repairable items without a suitable reliability model. MTTR may mean repair, restore, recover or resolve in different organizations. State exactly when its clock starts and stops.

  • MTBF = Operating time ÷ Failures
  • MTTR = Corrective repair time ÷ Repair events
  • Inherent availability = MTBF ÷ (MTBF + MTTR)

Keep the event definitions stable

Define failure by function and asset boundary. A brief reset, degraded mode, component replacement and complete line stop may require different categories. If operators and maintenance teams classify them differently, the trend reflects data policy as much as equipment behavior.

Separate active repair from logistics and administrative delay when that distinction matters. Inherent availability based on MTBF and MTTR excludes some delay types; operational availability from observed scheduled time can be lower.

Use the metrics together

Improving MTBF means reducing failure frequency through condition control, defect elimination, suitable preventive work and operating discipline. Improving MTTR means faster safe diagnosis, access, parts, instructions, coordination and verification.

Segment trends by asset family, failure mode and operating context. A fleet average can hide one chronic failure mode or a site where repair delay dominates. Link the KPI to work orders and failure evidence before prioritizing action.

Practical takeaways

  • MTBF measures failure spacing; MTTR measures restoration effort.
  • Define the asset, event and measurement clock explicitly.
  • Distinguish inherent from observed operational availability.
  • Connect trends to work orders and verified failure modes.
